Celebrate Oktoberfest with Atwater Brewmasters Weekend

Vail, CO – Atwater on Gore Creek in the Vail Cascade Resort will be featuring the Colorado Brewers Guild with this weekend’s ‘Craft Beer, Creative Cuisine’ chapter. Brewmaster’s Weekends are an integral part of the craft beer program at the Vail Cascade, featuring a different craft brewery & Brewmaster each month. John Carlson, Executive Director of the Colorado Brewers Guild, is the September Craft Beer celebrity, and to celebrate Oktoberfest with amazing craft beer he is bringing three smaller Colorado breweries to showcase their wares. September 7 & 8 is the first Oktoberfest celebration in Vail, and is a perfect time to celebrate craft beer with a fantastic Brewmaster’s Weekend. Friday afternoon from 4 – 7pm in Fireside Bar your four craft beer representatives will be showing off tasty treats from Trinity Brewing Co. in Colorado Springs, Rockyard Brewing Co.  in Castle Rock, and Three Barrel Brewing in Del Norte as well as a mix of other Colorado delights, including beers from Odell Brewing in Ft. Collins and Great Divide Brewing Co. in Denver. There is no charge for this event, and it is open to the public. Saturday evening at 6:00 pm will begin an interactive culinary experience open to only 30 people, and all three Brewmasters will speak in turn with the culinary team at a formal Brewmaster’s Dinner. Reservations are in high demand for this event, which is a steal at $50++ per person.

John Bricker, Owner/Brewmaster of Three Barrel Brewing Co., will be showcasing several of his beers for Friday night’s Meet the Brewmaster open tasting, but has selected his Bingler Weisse and Wildwood Ale for Saturday night’s Brewmaster’s Dinner. Jim Stinson, Brewmaster for Rockyard Brewing Co., will likewise bring goodies for Friday’s tasting, and has chosen to showcase his Dutch Pilsner for Saturday night’s menu. Jason Yester, Owner/Brewmaster of Trinity Brewing Co., will be highlighting his Chi Belgian Pilsener during dinner on Saturday, and his Apple Head Peu (fresh Palisade Apple Saison base) will most certainly be a highlight on Friday.

When creating the menu for the Brewmaster’s Dinner, the Atwater culinary team tuned into the overall Colorado theme. John Carlson always brings the history of Colorado to the fore, and this weekend will be no exception. Several of the beers were designed for this weekend with historical ingredients and processes in mind. Rockyard’s Dutch Pilsner inspired fresh, simply prepared Colorado fruit, explained Stephen Belie, chef de cuisine, and the resulting ‘Grilled Palisade Peach with cinnamon apple compote and crème fraiche ice cream’ promises to bring Colorado to the fore.

Jay Spickelmeier, Atwater sous chef, described the pairing with Trinity’s Chi Belgian Pilsener as more of an earthy ‘minerality’ that drew a connection with Grant Farms Organic Spinach. “The sharpness of the kumquat stands up to everything that’s going on, while the richness of the egg yolk and cheese mellow out the dish and create a wonderful balance, ” he said.  Seafood was a natural progression for Rockyard’s Bingeler Weisse and its amazing aromatics, and the complementing sea urchin butter cuts the acidity to round out an amazing dish. Lead line cook Adam Smith offered further insight with a “Colorado forest or wildnerness experience that is created with the wood notes of Three Barrel’s Wildwood Ale. We were excited to bring in a real outdoor essence with the earthiness of Colorado wild mushrooms in combination with this beer.”

September’s Brewmaster’s Weekend pulls the Vail Cascade craft beer program through the summer season, and although craft beer programming will continue with weekly Wednesday Craft Happy Hours and Friday Night Flights throughout the slower season, Brewmaster’s weekends will not resume until Thanksgiving Weekend. New Belgium Brewing Co., Wynkoop Brewing Co., and Ska Brewing Co. will round out the 2012 calendar year.
