Twenty Boys & Girls Club of Denver teens head to Vail for 24-hours of sports inspiration, motivation and fitness

VAIL, Colo. – Dec. 3, 2012 – Vail Cascade Resort and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment are teaming up to launch ‘Go the Distance,’ a motivational sports camp for disadvantaged inner-city youth. For its inaugural year, Vail Cascade and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver to select 20 deserving youth to participate in the program. On Dec. 8, these teens will head to Vail to participate in an overnight sports camp that will include education, nutrition and sports sessions lead by Aria Club trainers and dieticians and professional Colorado athletes. Through generous donations from the hosts and partners such as Colorado Mountain Express, Vail Resorts, and Aria Club this camp is free for all youth participants.

Life is full of challenges that can either take their toll on you or inspire you to greatness. While many of these camp participants have faced greater challenges than others, this program aims to use sports to demonstrate that success is more than luck; it’s about hard work, attitude, desire and the commitment you bring to the game – both on and off the court. The program also teaches the benefits of taking care of yourself, being involved in sports and the importance of leading an active, healthy lifestyle.

“The Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver has been a long-standing, inspirational force in our communities,” said Brett Schoenfield, general manager at Vail Cascade Resort. “They were the perfect partner for this program and we are excited to be part of their mission to inspire a brighter future for all kids, regardless of income, race, or ethnicity.”

Go the Distance Camp Details The program begins at The Pepsi Center, where Colorado Mountain Express, has donated their shuttles to transport the teens to Vail. Upon arrival, the program kicks off with a welcome reception followed by an athlete panel featuring Colorado Rapids goalie Chris Sharpe, Iowa Barnstormers arena football quarterback J.J. Raterink and Nuggets cheerleader Nicole Hurdle. The day concludes with breakout discussions, games, dinner and a movie. The following day, the teens will participate in a sports session led by Sharpe, Raterink and Aria Club trainers that will run through drills and skill development. Aria Club’s dietician will lead the final session focusing on the importance of exercise and a balanced diet. The program will end with a farewell ceremony acknowledging each child for the efforts that earned them this opportunity. Each participant will also receive a goodie bag filled with items from community partners.
